Off hand, I can only think of one instance prior to "Van Wilder 2" of a sequel that's missing the title character, but it's a dilly: the title character in "The Thin Man" is actually the murder victim, but that didn't stop the studio from slapping those identifying words into the titles of five sequels and a spin-off TV series. And just because I can't think of another example doesn't mean I won't eat my shorts if there isn't one.
